![]() Over 42 million people suffer from HIV/AIDS today. Every year it is estimated that 5 million of these cases are made up of 15-24 year olds living in sub-saharan Africa. While Faith Brewer, founder and president of Shoes for Smiles Organization, was on a mission trip to Africa, she saw shoeless kids with cuts on their feet and was enlightened to the fact that HIV/AIDS is mainly spread through contact with these cuts. She knew she had to help. Upon this need, Shoes for Smiles was formed in the Fall of 2008 to help shoe the young adults of Africa and give them a better hope for a future without HIV or AIDS. Shoes for Smiles was first started in November of 2008. The true inspiration began in July on a mission trip in South Africa. Looking around the cities, there were children everywhere shoeless. This is a big deal because its expected in Africa that nearly 90% of children have HIV/AIDS. By providing shoes, we can cut down that risk, and offer children a new hope. In June 2009, we sent almost 300 pairs of shoes to Africa. We distributed them amoungst orphanges, Kreshes, Squatter Camps, and schools. 2010 will be bigger and better, as we "Walk it Out in 2010".
